This post was originally shared on my IG account on in May 2021 in response to a question posed by Emily Stimpson Chapman. She invited her community to write a post to their former selves about what holiness looks like.
Dear Jeanette, (5 years ago)
Right now you are trying so hard to figure out what holiness looks like. You used to think you knew, but along the way you realized that your view of holiness was actually too narrow. Here are the three things that you are about to learn about holiness in the next 5 years.
First, you will learn that holiness can be found in the everyday, ordinary things. So, yes, giving your all to your role as wife, mother, homemaker and homeschool educator are not a waste of your education, and they are not keeping you from being your highest self. Instead, these things are helping form you into the truest version of yourself. When you feel lost, confused, or like you’re not “doing enough” to be holy, just remember, holiness is found in this simple question, “What’s the path of love, today?” Get that right each day and you’ll be on your way. But remember, even if you don’t do it perfectly, you are still on your way.
Secondly, you will learn that holiness can be found in suffering. You will experience devastating losses, unimaginable brokenness, and profound fear. Be not afraid! These places of suffering will be tender places, but in each one you will learn what surrender and mercy look like. In these moments, Jesus will draw you to himself if you let Him. Let Him. Suffering is a holy space and it will change you if you let it. Let it.
Thirdly, you should know now that obedience to God’s holy will is the surest way to holiness. Seek his will in your life and do it. It won’t be easy, and you may uncertain at times, but try anyway.
That’s all for now,
Jeanette, May 27, 2021
